What Constitutes a Natural Lip Enhancement?

The most aesthetically pleasing lips share these characteristics.

  • They have a defined outer border.
  • The upper lip has a gentle curve that peaks at a defined cupid’s bow.
  • There is symmetry between the left and right sides of the lips.
  • The lips are hydrated. (not crinkled)
  • Beautiful lips have the characteristics of a golden ratio of 1:1.618.
  • The forward curve of the upper and lower lips are balanced to the projection of the nose and chin.

What is the golden ratio?

The golden ratio is a ratio between two numbers that equals approximately 1.618. It is commonly found in nature and is considered aesthetically pleasing. Artists and designers, and cosmetic Doctors use this ratio balance for a natural-looking lip enhancement. It is used in a few measures:

  • The perfect lip ratio is defined as the lower lip being 1.618 times the height of the upper lip.
  • For optimal appeal, the mouth should be 1.618 times the width of the nose.

The Ricketts E-Line and Lip Projection in profile

In profile, considering the projection of the lips is essential.  When a line is drawn from the nose to the chin, the lips should touch the line. This is also called “the finger trap test”, and it rounds in social media a couple of years ago.  It is an adaptation of the Ricketts E-Line. (Used in dentistry)  The upper and lower lip position is relative to a line drawn from nose tip to chin tip. This test assumes you start with ‘a typical’  nose and chin length. This test will not apply to someone with a very long nose, and the same goes for the chin point. But it can be used as a guide for lip pout projection. For example, A top lip that bulges past the bottom lip of the Ricketts E line is not considered natural lip enhancement!

Best Lip Filler

Hyaluronic gel filler is used in the creation of natural lip injections. It is a naturally occurring component of the lips. In addition, the hyaluronic gel is generally well-tolerated, dissolves naturally over time, and is available in a wide variety of presentations – to enhance the appearance of each lip. The best lip filler for you will be determined by the result you want to achieve. Some women believe that the volume of filler injected is the most critical factor in determining the procedure’s outcome. As a result, they ask for 1/2 ml of filler for subtly enhanced lips. However, the type of dermal filler used has a much more significant influence on the final result. Although it is appropriate to use 1/2 ml lip filler sometimes, most often, 1 ml is required to achieve a natural lip shape. Therefore, even women who desire a fuller, plumper lip may only require 1ml of lip filler to achieve their desired results.

Lip Injections for Young Women vs Mature Women

Lip injections are frequently used in younger women to increase natural volume or rebalance lips. For example, they are restoring upper and lower lip ratios to the golden ratio, restoring a balance between the left and right sides of lips, or increasing the forward projection to enhance natural beauty. In comparison, lip injections in mature women can help reduce the appearance of upper lip lines and restore lips to a more youthful volume, shape and appearance. This is entirely individual, though, and we can help you do you!

Natural Lip Fillers vs Full Pout

The difference in the outcome of subtle lip filler vs a full plump lip is with the dermal filler used. There is an array of thin, thick, and everything between dermal fillers. Some achieve more projection; some achieve more stretch, some resist breaking down, some are better as lip line fillers etc. So the best lip filler depends on your goals. Do you want natural lip filler or very subtle lip enhancement? Do you want lip-line filler? Or do you like a plump pout? Our doctors provide a free consultation at the outset to assess your natural lip shape and ask what you want to achieve before advising on the best lip filler approach.

Natural Lip Fillers for Young Women

Because your lips are such a prominent feature of your face, the size and symmetry of your lips are critical beauty characteristics. Natural lip fillers and subtle lip enhancement are prefered by most women who want to achieve a more balanced ratio between the lower and upper lips. Others, however, are concerned with having a beautiful pout. Given that each natural lip enhancement is unique, we’ve compiled a gallery of before and after photos to show you what you can expect.

Subtle Lip Filler for Mature Lips

As we grow older, our lips become thinner, giving us more crinkled lips and a slightly more masculine look. Additionally, wrinkles and lines on the upper lip develop. Fillers restore volume to the face in older women who have lost it over time and can be used for lips and lip lines. While using hyaluronic gel fillers to enhance your lips, you can keep your lips looking and feeling young without the apparent appearance of over-plumped lips.

  • The majority of older women choose a subtle lip filler to restore youthful volume;
  • However, some women only require lip line filler to reduce upper lip lines,
  • Alternatively, subtle lip enhancement and lip line filler could be used.

Lip Fillers Men

Due to facial hair and skin, higher collagen content does not develop upper lip wrinkles. Therefore, men who want to enhance their appearance with lip fillers typically opt for subtle changes. Some men, however, desire more prominent and fuller lips. At Pearl, we offer natural male lip enhancements.

Lip Line Filler Before and After

Lip Line Filler

With the progression of time, some women develop upper lip lines in addition to lip thinning. Also called smokers lines, they are not necessarily caused by smoking, and they do not occur in men (because of the moustache hair). Lip injections can smooth out lip lines, reduce lipstick bleeds, and reduce smoker’s lines. Lip wrinkles are treated by injecting filler into the lines and the border of the lips. This treatment is not about increasing lip volume, although this can be performed at the same time.

Generally, lip line filler requires 1 ml of filler.

Lip Filler Treatment

The reality is that each treatment is tailored to your individual needs.

  • The first step is a free consultation with our Doctors to discuss what you want to achieve with your lip fillers.
  • Numbing cream is applied 30 minutes before treatment.
  • The lip filler procedure takes about 30 minutes.
  • The effects of lip injections are noticeable immediately and last between 6 and 9 months.
  • There is generally some swelling, so your lips immediately after treatment will need to settle, with full results developing over about a month.
  • Our Doctors will give you aftercare instructions to take care of your beautiful new set of lips!

Lip fillers typically last 6 to 12 months. However, longevity varies depending on the person and the product. It is typical to have the first and second lip injections six months apart, and follow-up treatments can provide long-lasting results. Lip line filler should be repeated every six months. Some women get lip fillers as an annual treat (for example, before Christmas or a birthday), but the frequency with which you get lip filler is entirely up to you.

    • Swelling is common and can last between 1 and 2 days. Unless you tend to swell, this is generally only minor.
    • Bruising is relatively common with lip injections because lips are highly vascular. Therefore, some people are more prone to bruising, and you should avoid anything that can thin your blood before lip enhancement.
    • So, before an important event, it’s best to avoid this type of treatment.
    • After treatment, refrain from consuming alcohol or engaging in strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
    • If you are susceptible to cold sores, lip fillers can precipitate an eruption, and our Doctors will prescribe prophylaxis
