What is Microdermabrasion?

Micros are a non-invasive procedure that exfoliates the outmost layer of skin cells to reveal healthier, deeper layers. It works with two actions; the first is vacuum suction which draws the skin into contact with the second, a gentle ‘abrasive’ component.

  • The suction helps unclog pores and clear congestion, making it ideal to settle pimples, acne and hormonal breakouts.
  • The gentle exfoliation of the skin’s outmost layer improves your skin glow by revealing healthier layers of skin.
  • The original ‘abrasion’ was ‘dermabrasion’. This more aggressive treatment is no longer used.

What Is Involved in a Microdermabrasion Facial?

A microdermabrasion facial is painless. You may feel mild scratching or gentle pulling. For your first micro, our therapist will start with low settings.

  • A microdermabrasion facial starts with double-cleansing.
  • We tailor the micro according to your skin issues.
  • Micros may leave the skin slightly reddened for up to 24 hours.
  • If blackheads and whiteheads are prominent, extraction facials should be added.

Microdermabrasion Facial at Pearl

Regularly we combine a microdermabrasion facial with a chemical peel to get more advanced exfoliating treatments. The combination of superficial peels delivers a more refined therapy.

What Does Microdermabrasion Do?

Micros works by sloughing surface skin cells to exfoliate dry or rough outer layers.  Exfoliation is a cornerstone of healthy skin. It is a versatile treatment, targeting areas such as the face, neck and décolletage. Achieve a higher level of exfoliation by combining Microderm with peels and extractions.

Microdermabrasion Results?

Do micros work? The answer is yes, as long as you are the right candidate. Microderms are excellent to help settle acne and for minor skin imperfections.

  • reduce skin pigmentation
  • minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles,
  • lift dull skin tone,
  • reduce open or enlarged pores
  • help clear blackheads.

However, a microderm is a non-invasive procedure. Therefore, it will not remedy acne scars, sagging skin, established wrinkles, and correct facial creases or folds. However, these can be addressed with resurfacing, skin tightening, dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections and other treatments we offer.

Microdermabrasion for Acne

A microdermabrasion facial can help settle acne for clean skin and a bright complexion. The microderm results in a deep cleansing to resolve pimples, whiteheads and blackheads. The layer of skin removed consists of dead skin cells adding to pore obstruction and acne. Thus, the surface skin is not damaged in the process.

How Does Microdermabrasion for Acne Work?

Microdermabrasion for acne works purely on the physical clearing of pore obstruction. Moreover, combining micros with other modalities amplifies the benefits. Therefore we often combine micros with extractions, chemical peels and skincare. In addition, we offer a range of acne treatments, including Kleresca acne treatment, to treat moderate to severe and cystic acne.

Microdermabrasion for Acne Treatment

A series of microdermabrasion facial treatments are required, spaced one to four weeks apart. (Depending on the severity of the acne.) After each session, you will notice a gradual clearing of obstruction and settling of acne.

Micros are excellent for eliminating hormonal breakouts, pimples, and acne and removing clogged or congested pores for clean and clear skin. We would recommend trialling this more natural approach to settling acne before diving into medical treatments. We combine our micro’s with peels for more advanced exfoliation.

Microdermabrasion for acne scars

The only way micros can help with acne scarring is to prevent it! Microdermabrasion is not an effective treatment for acne scars. It can contribute to polishing the surface appearance; however, it will not penetrate the dermis and initiate repair. We treat acne scars with a range of more advanced medical treatments. Radiofrequency resurfacing with eMatrix, laser scar treatment, PRP therapy, skin needling, or subcision. Dermal filler is also used to improve the cosmetic appearance of acne scarring.

Diamond Microdermabrasion

Diamond microdermabrasion uses suction, drawing the skin to a diamond-tipped wand. The wand is moved across the surface to exfoliate gently. Diamond Microderm is newer than crystal spray and has significant evolution in facials. In addition, in recent years, there have been attempts to improve treatment outcomes with combination facial treatments.

Alternatives to Diamond Microdermabrasion

  1. For skin textural concerns, fractional CO2 laser treatments and radiofrequency provide superior results. Because laser and radiofrequency can penetrate the dermal layer, the results are incomparable. Sublative radiofrequency improves the texture and surface appearance of sun damage quicker. Generally, four treatments are required though sometimes up to 6 may be needed.
    2. Chemical Peels. Vitamin A peels are more appropriate for addressing pigmentation as well as skin texture concerns from sun damage. This peel takes 15 mins and generally provides full-face flaking within the week. Usually, three may be required.
    3. Fractional laser and skin needling are more useful for improving skin texture, tone and quality. These have more downtime and cost more but provide superior results with fewer treatments.
    4. Combinations of microdermabrasion with glycolic peels allow deeper penetration of peels.
    5. Pigmentation is better treated with laser, BBL, laser or chemical peels

Microdermabrasion exfoliates the surface layer of dry skin, allowing penetration of active ingredients and hydration for that beautiful skin feel. So with the skin prepped with a cleanse and microdermabrasion, the tailoring begins. Whether you have blemishes you want to banish, unwanted brown spots, dry skin, oily skin, sensitive skin or wrinkles, we can tailor to help you achieve your skin goals, we offer you a complimentary consultation with our skin therapists, and they will advise which microderm facial is best for you.

No preparation is  required for a microdermabrasion.

Unlike our laser treatments and peels which require skin prep you can jump right in, making it perfect start to any skin journey.

Microdermabrasion is extremely safe.

There is a temporary redness that fades within a couple of hours or overnight. Depending on the treatment applied there can be some mild flaking after a couple of days.
This can be covered with an Oxygenetix makeup base – the perfect aftercare for any treatment.
