Medical Weight Loss Consultation

Our Doctors consult on medical weight loss and provide a range of options. Medical weight loss solutions include a range of medications; however, the latest is a weight loss injection. Developed initially as a medication for type 2 diabetes, the class has been effective in helping you lose 10–15% of your weight in one year.  Doctor Anastasia is particularly interested in weight loss and cosmetic treatments. She consults and can provide the full range of medical weight loss options, assessing your suitability and reviewing all your options to decide which would be most appropriate to assist you.

To be eligible for the weight loss injection, you must have a BMI over 27. You must make an appointment with our doctors for a full initial assessment.

  • The initial consultation costs $150. You must pay this in full to secure the appointment, but it is fully refundable if you give more than 24 hours’ notice.
  • If you have not had blood tests recently for risk factors, you must have one of these performed, and the pathology service is outside of the above cost. Generally, these can be bulk-billed.

How do the weight loss injections work?

Daily or Weekly Injection: When injected, this hormone, already produced in the gut, gets to the underlying reason for weight gain.

Reduces food cravings: The injections affect the brain’s reward centre, so cravings occur less frequently.

Reset Metabolic Pathways: The weight loss injections reset your body’s metabolic pathways, resulting in a 10-15% weight loss in one year.

Lowers your body weight set point. Your set point is the weight your body fights to maintain based on biology. Reducing this means your body no longer fights to regain the lost weight.

Why hasn’t anything worked for me yet?

Gaining weight changes how your body responds to hunger and causes inflammation, making it increasingly difficult to sustain weight loss. Diets and exercise will not always produce effects for women with hormonal and inflammatory weight influences. This is where the weight-loss injections come in. They help you respond in a more normalised way, reducing hunger. You will need to implement long-term, sustainable changes for health.

Weight Loss Injection - F.A.Q.

The weight loss injection mimics the body’s natural GLP-1 hormone, regulating digestion and reducing hunger. In 2017, it was approved for weight management in Australia.

This medicine is thought to be the most effective for long-term weight loss when combined with behavioural changes.

What is it called? We cannot give any brand or medicine names (anything listed as S4 medication) until you consult with Dr Anastasia, as Australian law prohibits this.

At the consultation and assessment, you are encouraged to ask as many questions as possible about the weight loss injections and other options Dr Anastasia will present so you can be confident that this is the best option.

The medication is injected via a pen with a tiny needle. It is not painful and feels just like a pinprick). You can inject this into either your abdomen or thigh.

Every weight loss journey is unique, but here is some information to give you an idea of what to expect: After a year, a typical patient loses 12.1% of their body weight:

In a 2017 study, 76.1 % of people lost more than 5% of their body weight after 20 weeks, and 28.3 % had lost more than 10%. (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5358074/)

Individuals lost 12.1 % of their body weight in 52 weeks when this class of drugs was combined with behavioural adjustments, according to a 2020 study published in the International Journal of Obesity (almost twice as much as behavioural changes alone).

This depends on where you get the prescription Dr Anastasia prescribes filled. But generally, it is around $300 – 400 per month.

Weight and Gut Health: Key Insights

We recommend a balanced diet and exercise programme to support weight loss injections. Though they are very effective, you need to do the work. Our Doctors can refer you to a dietician if required.

Weight control is closely linked to gut health, as a balanced gut microbiome supports metabolic and immune functions essential for weight management. The Western diet, often low in fibre and omega-3s, starves beneficial gut bacteria while encouraging the growth of harmful bacteria that lead to inflammation and weight gain.

A gut-healing approach, starting with fibre-rich, plant-based foods, polyphenols, and omega-3s, as seen in the Mediterranean diet, to nourish beneficial gut bacteria and combat inflammation. Blue Zone diets, with high plant diversity and minimally processed foods, exemplify this approach by promoting healthy gut microbes and reducing chronic disease risks.

Processed foods, trans fats, artificial sweeteners, and excessive animal protein in the standard diet disrupt gut health, leading to inflammation and weight gain. Conversely, diets rich in monounsaturated and omega-3 fats, plant-based proteins, and fibre foster a healthy microbiome. Fibre, in particular, feeds good bacteria, supports the gut lining, reduces inflammation, and promotes metabolic health, appetite regulation, and overall wellness. A diverse plant-based diet is the single best predictor of a healthy gut microbiome, supporting a balanced gut and effective weight control.
