What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma Hair Treatment?

Platelet-rich plasma for under eyes, or vampire facial, is commonly used in facial rejuvenationโ€”but PRP for hair growth is increasingly popular for restoring hair health.

This treatment involves extracting your blood, isolating the plasma rich in growth factors (platelet-rich plasma), and injecting it into areas of the scalp affected by hair thinning.  These growth factors work to:

  • Reactivate dormant hair follicles
  • Extend the growth phase of existing hair
  • Increase the thickness and density of hair strands
  • Reduce shedding

The effectiveness of PRP hair treatment is highest when started early. If baldness is advanced, a hair transplant or scalp micropigmentation may be more appropriate.

Benefits of PRP Hair Treatment

โœ” Stimulates natural hair growth

โœ” Strengthens hair follicles

โœ” Slows down hair loss progression

โœ” Improves scalp health and blood flow

โœ” Supports post-transplant healing

โœ” Pairs effectively with LED light therapy

What Is the PRP Hair Treatment Process?

Consultation: Your hair and scalp are examined to determine suitability. We rule out medical conditions and confirm your eligibility for PRP hair injections.

Collection: A small amount of blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to isolate the platelet-rich plasma.

Injection: The PRP is injected into targeted areas of the scalp using fine needles, concentrating on thinning zones or where growth needs to be stimulated.

LED Light Therapy: Each session includes LED light therapy to support blood flow further and boost the effectiveness of PRP.

How Many PRP Hair Loss Treatments Will I Need?

A typical course involves four sessions spaced 2โ€“4 weeks apart.

๐Ÿ“ Best results are seen when PRP hair growth treatments are started at the first signs of thinning.

๐Ÿฉบ After a course, maintenance treatments may be recommended every 6โ€“12 months, depending on your hair goals and response.

Benefits of PRP Hair Growth Injections?

PRP is effective for treating:

  • Male pattern baldness
  • Female pattern hair loss
  • Early-stage hair thinning
  • Hair shedding from stress or hormonal changes
  • Hair transplant recovery

However, PRP hair loss treatments are less effective in cases of complete baldness.  If you’re experiencing thinning, book early.

Hair Growth Injections for Men and Women

Hair loss affects up to 50% of men by age 50 and 60% of women over their lifetime.  Common causes include:

  • Genetic predisposition (e.g., AR gene sensitivity to DHT)
  • Hormonal changes (e.g., postpartum, menopause)
  • Stress and illness
  • Nutritional deficiencies

PRP and plasma hair treatment are non-surgical and have fewer side effects than medication or transplant surgery.

What to Combine with PRP Hair Treatment?

๐Ÿ“Œ LED Light Therapy: Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) is clinically proven to stimulate hair follicles and support scalp circulation. It works synergistically with PRP.

๐Ÿ“Œ Topical Treatments & Supplements: Your doctor may recommend over-the-counter products like minoxidil or prescription support.

๐Ÿ“Œ Microneedling or Exosomes: Combining PRP with exosomes or microneedling may enhance absorption and stimulate deeper follicular response for certain patients.

How PRP Hair Treatment Works Over Time

  • First 4 weeks: Some patients notice reduced shedding
  • Weeks 6โ€“8: Early signs of new growth begin
  • Weeks 12+: Hair appears thicker, with greater volume and improved density

๐ŸŒฟ PRP is a progressive treatmentโ€”it works gradually and builds with each session.

Female Hair Loss and PRP

PRP hair loss treatments are well-tolerated in womeIt’s particularly beneficial for those experiencing:

  • Postpartum hair loss
  • Hormonal shedding (e.g., PCOS, menopause)
  • Diffuse thinning
  • Early androgenetic alopecia

๐Ÿ‘ฉ Women who are not suitable for other medications like finasteride often find PRP a great option.

Side Effects from PRP Hair Injections?

Side effects are minimal as the treatment uses your body. You may experience:

  • Mild redness or swelling at the injection site
  • Temporary tenderness
  • Bruising (rare)

These effects typically resolve within 24โ€“48 hours.

When PRP for Hair Growth May Not Be Suitable

PRP is not ideal for:

  • Areas of complete baldness
  • Scarring alopecia
  • Patients with bleeding disorders or platelet dysfunction
  • Active scalp infections

Your doctor will assess your scalp to determine eligibility.

Light Therapy for Hair Loss

The wavelengths of light include red light and infrared light, 655 nm and 780 nm. This therapy only works in the early stages of thinning, so start when you first notice a receding hairline. We always combine the PRP treatments with light therapy, and topical and oral medicines can be added.

Medications for Hair Loss

1. Minoxidil 2% is a topical medication for male and female pattern baldness available over the counter.; it is rubbed into the scalp directly at thinning areas twice daily. It is effective in a percentage of men and is best started early. However, it is not helpful for other forms of hair loss. At Pearl, we also provide compounded scripts for stronger 5-8% minoxidil combined with retinoic acid and caffeine. Treatment takes 12 weeks to be noticeable.
Side effects include scalp irritation and oiliness of hair or a contact allergic reaction. In addition, minoxidil must be used continuously, as once you stop, all hair is susceptible to loss again.
2. Finasteride is a prescription treatment for male-pattern baldness. It takes six weeks to see results. Finasteride is a DHT blocker that decreases new hair loss and can cause some regrowth. 85% of men stop losing hair while taking finasteride, but it can affect sex drive and fertility or cause impotence. When you stop taking finasteride, hair loss resumes.

3. Corticosteroid injections are used for alopecia areata patches, and oral medication for alopecia totalis or universalis is prescribed by a dermatologist.

Topical Hair Thickeners or Hair Fibres

There are several hair thickeners available in Australia. Made of keratin protein charged with static electricity, they merge with your thinning hair to create a cosmetic appearance of thicker hair. Toppik hair fibres are available at Price Line, creating an immediate camouflaging effect.

Hair Transplant

Hair transplants are performed under local anaesthesia. Healthy hair follicles are obtained from donor sites at the back and side of the head. It is a highly specialised and lengthy procedure that may require more than one session. The techniques used include FUE or FUT. FUE is newer, with a small punch plug of less than 1mm being transplanted into the bald sections, rather than the older FUT, which requires. Risks include failure, dissatisfaction with the density of hair regrowth, injections and scarring. We can provide a referral to a specialist in hair transplant surgery.

Limitations of hair transplant surgery include the level of satisfaction with treatment. More than half of people completing hair transplant surgery are unsatisfied with hair density. This is because they are limited by the zone for donor hair which is the narrow band at the back of the head. So starting early with treatments like PRP, which regrow hair becomes vital.

No Hair Loss Treatment or Embracing Baldness

It has become fashionable to embrace baldness by shaving your head. However, the stubble does grow back. Scalp micropigmentation can play an enormous role in normalising. A shaved head with a bald spot tattooed back to look like your natural hair looks fantastic.

Helmets For Hair Regrowth

Based on low-level light therapy not proven effective.

Hair Loss Shampoo

No shampoo will regrow hair. However, some shampoos can damage hair and lead to increased hair loss. Specialised topical lotions, including minoxidil, that are applied after shampooing are effective if initiated early.

Needling for Hair Loss

Microneedling has been reported to help stimulate hair growth. However, the effectiveness of needling is limited and based on observation. When the scalp is traumatised with either roller or Dermapen, it triggers a healing response that can stimulate short fine hairs or micro-vellus. Vellus hair does not continuously grow like terminal hair, so this vellus hair growth does not last very long.

Using hair rollers at home shows some benefits with an increase in vellus hair, but this needs to be performed continuously. In addition, there is some risk that needling may also break the hair or cause inflammation which could induce hair shedding. It is, however, not likely to result in damage to the follicle.
